Pawless instruments are hand made. Each one is an individual. Every sound board in a Pawless guitar for example is designed and braced for that particular guitar. When a sound board in a Pawless guitar is sanded to the right "thickness", nothing is used to measure that thickness except it has the right "feel" to the builder. There are no computer guided machines in the Pawless shop. The only "power" tools used are the basic sanders, drills, planers, and polishers.
Pawless Guitars started in 1995. At the time of this page update, it seems to be near the 100th guitar mark. Production numbers will be updated soon. Since 1995, a few things have changed. The shop has moved, the waiting list is longer, and the guitars are getting better each time one is produced. One thing however has taken a step back. With more experience in building and the skills honed by the builder, it has allowed the guitars here to be built in even MORE traditional ways. For some examples the dove-tailed necks are sometimes brought in as machined blanks, yet about half of the guitars being produced in this shop now are carved from "scratch". A bridge is sanded to shape "free form" on a sander. A simple bridge plate hardwood might be determined by the feel of the sound board, or by the sound the player is looking for. It might be a simple Rosewood, but then again it might be a piece of Mesquite. Nothing is set in stone in this shop from one part of a guitar to the next.
If you're looking for an instrument that is produced in a place where most of the components are the same, this is not the place to look for an instrument.
The instrument building "tradition" is highly regarded in this shop. Yet the builder is very open minded in finding a way to build a better guitar while using those methods. There are times when a ruler is just not good enough and you have to throw it out in certain situations. It all comes down to what the eye sees and the ear hears. That's the direction used in this shop. The sound is priority one, and the appearance of the instrument comes second. Right now they sound and look great.
If you're interested in a Pawless Guitar please feel free to email any questions you have at the link below. If you have a question about pricing or even just some advice on buying an instrument of another make, recommendations are available. However, it's just the opinion of the builder!
