"Pawless Mesquite Special"
Limited Edition of Six
What's been now nicknamed as "Texas Rosewood", the Honey Mesquite wood out of the Lone Star State has proven to be a very durable, yet a pleasant tone wood for acoustic guitars.
This highly figured wood is not only appealing, but has the same durability and "heartiness" is has growing in the Texas landscape and the changing environment.
From the first prototype "show" guitar for Mammoth Ivory, to the latest current projects that are in my shop now, they continue to be popular. Even with the choices of Indian Rosewood, Maple, Mahogany, and other woods, the Mesquite is still the front runner of choices with Pawless Guitar clients.
However, the stock is slowly depleting at the shop, and before the "pickings" get slim for more "premium" back and side sets, tthe best sets have been reserved for these six guitars.
To begin this project, the back and side wood choices will be determined by extra-ordinary color and "character" as compared to the other "Texas Rosewood" sets.
The top will be of Sitka Spruce, which is my choice of top tone Spruces. The top will be Pawless modifications of the traditional x-bracing. It will be scalloped down to the "feel" of how the plates work with the bracing itself on each particular guitar. The top's bracing will have the traditional modified "feature" as in all my acoustics.
The neck will one-piece Mahogany with an adjustable truss rod. It is GLUED, and not bolted on. The fingerboard will be of Ebony.
The density and the sound transfer characteristics of Cocobolo is great, as well as the great color and beauty is projects. It's color works with Mesquite's color really well, as it seems to have a hint of the Coco's "red" in it. Therefore the headstock veneer, the bridge, the endstrip and all the bindings will be of Cocobolo. Even the extra-thick bridge plate under the soundboard will be of Cocobolo utilizing it's great qualities of strength and sound transfer.
Into the Cocobolo headstock will be the premium "PAWLESS" done in highly colored abalone. The tuners will be gold colored Schallers, which will highlight the gold of the Honey Mesquite woods.
The guitar will sport a herringbone inlay in the top. The soundhole will be a traditional set of black and white WOOD rings, not plastic.
The bridge pins, saddle and nut will be of white bone.
The back will have a zig-zag centerstrip running down the middle of the two back plates.
Each future "owner" of the Mesquite Special will have their own personal web page to watch the building of their guitar. The page is immediately up and running at the time the deposit on the guitar is received.
The guitars are guaranteed for the original owner's life.
Each and every Pawless Guitar is one of a kind, and each is remembered by the builder. Even with this special series of six guitars, each one of THESE will be different in it's own way.
